What's Planned
The City of Cape Town will start construction in September 2024 along the section of Govan Mbeki Road between NY72 Road and the Klipfontein Road intersections.
This is in preparation for the next phase of MyCiTi bus services. Phase 2A will bring quality, safe and rapid public transport to more than 30 communities linking Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Wynberg and Claremont.
Roadworks are planned in phases over the next three years to build MyCiTi lanes, stations and stops, upgraded roads and intersections and safer facilities for walking and cycling.
How construction will impact you
- At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction at all times.
- Work will be largely limited to weekdays outside peak times to minimise the impact on traffic.
- Residents will be notified in advance of exceptional circumstances where work is required at other times
The planned work will still add to journey times and motorists are urged to consider public transport, ride-sharing and lift club options.
The City realises the inconvenience involved and appreciates the patience and support of everyone affected in order for us to undertake this necessary work for the benefit of residents and road users well into the future.
Job Opportunities
The project includes some opportunities to employ local labour and to source goods and services from local subcontractors. Unemployed residents who are interested must register on the City’s Jobseeker Database at the local Subcouncil office or at an upcoming MyCiTi public information day. Local enterprises interested in providing goods or services must register on the supplier database at the local Subcouncil.
