Section of Wetton Road, Wynberg, widened for future public transport services
2025-03-20
The City of Cape Town will commence with the widening of a section of Wetton Road (M9) in Wynberg by the end of March 2025. The construction zone stretches from the intersection with Rosmead Avenue in the west to the M5 bridge in the east. Commuters and road users should anticipate delays while the work is ongoing.
A section of Wetton Road (M9) will be widened between the intersection with Rosmead Avenue and the M5 bridge to allow a dedicated left and right turning lane for the MyCiTi buses off Wetton Road. The turning lanes will give the buses access to the new Wynberg MyCiTi bus facility to be constructed at a later stage.
The provisional completion date is end of October 2025.
What to expect:
- Work will take place outside of the peak hour periods from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00
- Work may happen on Saturdays and public holidays if needed
- One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic as far as possible along the impacted section of Wetton Road
- Traffic passing through this section will have to slow down
- The section to be widened will be resurfaced and new road markings applied
- The existing access to the racecourse will be upgraded and formalised as part of the project
- New sidewalks will be constructed along this section of Wetton Road; inclusive of improvements to the stormwater infrastructure to assist with managing runoff during rain events
‘There are now multiple ongoing construction projects in Claremont and Wynberg, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to provide the necessary infrastructure for the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service. We are trying our best to limit the traffic disruptions and delays, but unfortunately roadworks always come with a level of inconvenience. We are very aware of the impact these projects are having on commuters who are travelling between the metro-south east and Wynberg and Claremont. I want to thank you for your patience and support while our efforts are under way to implement a world-class public transport service to keep Capetonians moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
