Transport and Installation of Pre-Cast Concrete Beams for Elevated MyCiTi Bus Overpass on Govan Mbeki and Duinefontein Road Intersection
2025-02-28
The City of Cape Town is committed to enhancing the city’s public transport infrastructure through the construction of a new elevated bi-directional MyCiTi bus overpass on Govan Mbeki Road, spanning the Duinefontein intersection. To facilitate this important project, a series of large, pre-cast concrete beams will be transported on Friday 14 March 2025, necessitating temporary traffic adjustments.
Project Overview
As part of the ongoing improvements to Cape Town’s public transit system, this elevated overpass will streamline MyCiTi bus service, easing traffic flow and increasing transit efficiency for all road users. The pre-cast reinforced concrete beams, 32 meters in length, form part of the critical structural elements in the overpass construction. Their installation will ensure the strength and stability of this infrastructure, ensuring safe and efficient road operations in the area.
Transport Details and Route
The beams will be transported to the construction site as abnormal loads, escorted by traffic control teams to ensure both public and personnel safety. To minimise disruption, the convoy will move along planned routes, but due to the size and weight of these beams, they will require special handling and significant manoeuvring upon arrival. Temporary delays and brief lane closures will occur as the beams are off-loaded, positioned and installed.
Both lanes serving traffic towards Gugulethu on Govan Mbeki Road will be closed. The two lanes serving traffic in the opposite direction will accommodate traffic in both directions. The left turning lane from Govan Mbeki Road into Duinefontein Road will be closed. All traffic will be accommodated using the other remaining lane. One lane will be closed on Duinefontein Road for traffic approaching the Govan Mbeki Road intersection. All traffic will be accommodated using the other remaining lane.

Impact on Public and Traffic
While the City has taken steps to mitigate disruptions, road users should be aware of potential impacts:
- Lane Narrowing and Closures: Temporary narrowing of lanes and occasional intersection closures will be necessary along Govan Mbeki Road and Duinefontein Road as low-bed trucks, cranes, and support vehicles handle the beams. These measures are essential for public safety but may impact traffic flow intermittently.
- Traffic Delays: Road users may experience minor delays during off-loading, positioning and installation of the beams. The City encourages residents to plan accordingly, allow extra travel time, and follow all on-site traffic instructions to ensure their safety and the safe handling of materials.
The City appreciates the community's patience and cooperation as it continues to build a more connected Cape Town. For regular updates on this and other construction projects, please visit the City of Cape Town’s official website or follow our social media channels.
