New permanent MyCiTi stops to be constructed across the City
2025-03-04
The City of Cape Town will be converting 77 temporary MyCiTi bus stops at locations in Atlantis, Century City, Melkbosstrand, Blaauwbergstrand, Milnerton, Hout Bay, Mitchells Plain, Summer Greens, Sunningdale and Woodstock into permanent bus stops.
‘The City always first installs temporary MyCiTi stops along our routes to allow planners to test and confirm the safest, most convenient location for each stop before we build a permanent MyCiTi stop structure. The best locations for the 77 temporary stops have now been confirmed, following a thorough public participation process. As a result, I am pleased to announce that these stops will now be converted to permanent bus stops providing shelter, improved visibility and more comfort for our passengers. This is part of our motto to do all we can to keep Capetonians moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Some of the permanent bus stops will be built a few meters from their original locations to comply with road safety requirements, maintain design consistency and address space limitations.
Work is scheduled to start this month, March 2025 and will continue in phases until July 2026.
The features of these new permanent bus stops which residents can look forward to include:
- Branded MyCiTi totem poles with lighting for improved visibility
- Leaning rails for passenger comfort
- Bus service information
- Universal access measures, including tactile paving and wheelchair-accessible ramps
- Shelters with seating at high-traffic stops
The areas where the permanent bus stops will be built include:
- Atlantis
- Century City
- Melkbosstrand
- Blaauwbergstrand
- Milnerton
- Hout Bay
- Mitchells Plain
- Summer Greens
- Sunningdale
- Woodstock
Services will remain fully operational during construction, although minor delays may occur. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and to download the MyCiTi app for the latest bus times.
Construction includes opportunities for local employment and subcontracting; the City therefore encourages Interested residents to register on the City’s Jobseeker Database at their local subcouncil soonest.
The City appreciates the patience and support from all passengers as it works to improve the MyCiTi service for all commuters.
