MyCiTi phishing scam alert
2024-11-05
The City of Cape Town would like to alert members of the public to a social media post that is falsely offering free MyCiTi travel as well as discounted MyCiTi bus cards. Residents are urged not to interact with the post and to report it to your social media platform as fraudulent activity or false advertising.
‘The City is aware of a new Facebook page called ‘Cape Town public transport card’ with a following of 76 people that is promising six-months free travel on MyCiTi. This is a fake post and is not in any way endorsed by the City. These fraudulent posts are circulating on Facebook and possibly other social media channels. We have reported this account and its contents to Meta/Facebook and requested the urgent removal of posts,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Members of the public are advised not to share these posts nor engage with them, but rather choose the ‘Find support or report’ option on Facebook, follow prompts and select the ‘Scam, fraud or impersonation’ category.
MyCiTi is not running a promotion of this sort. All reliable MyCiTi information is available via official MyCiTi social media channels, the MyCiTi website (www.myciti.org.za) and the City of Cape Town website (www.capetown.gov.za).
Tips to avoid being scammed:
- Always verify the identity of the account or user sharing a post before you interact with it. Only trust information from official sources.
- Do not click on suspicious links or share sensitive information unless you are sure it is a secure, trustworthy source.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Transport Information Centre (TIC) on 080 065 64 63 when uncertain about the authenticity of a MyCiTi related social media post or advertisement. The TIC is available 24/7, and toll-free from a landline or a cell phone. Alternatively, residents can email Transport.Info@capetown.gov.za
