MyCiTi commuter numbers soaring on routes from Hout Bay, Camps Bay and along the West Coast
2015-10-12
In the past five years since the City of Cape Town launched the first of the MyCiTi bus routes in the inner-city in May 2010, the service has recorded approximately 32,5 million passenger journeys.
‘We are now transporting, on average, 59 184 passengers every weekday with the MyCiTi buses covering a distance of over 1 270 000 kilometres each month. School learners, workers, pensioners and tourists now hop onto a MyCiTi bus to reach their destinations, confirming that the service is embraced by all of our diverse residents,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.
According to the latest commuter statistics for the month of August 2015, the most popular MyCiTi stations are as follows:
- Civic Centre with 207 797 recorded instances of boarding, transfer and alighting,
- Table View with 163 928,
- Adderley with 155 809,
- Atlantis with 148 992,
- Dunoon with 76 310, and
- Melkbosstrand with 67 919.
‘TCT is particularly heartened by the exceptional uptake in Atlantis since 4 July 2015, with the roll-out of the remainder of the MyCiTi feeder routes and the T02 trunk route which provides residents with a direct route to the Civic Centre station. Following on from meetings with the community, TCT made some changes to the feeder routes and stops and the latest statistics confirm that the service in Atlantis is now settling in. From 1 to 31 August 2015 up to 248 318 instances of boarding and alighting have been recorded at the bus stops along the seven feeder routes in Atlantis,’ said Councillor Herron.
Unsurprisingly the MyCiTi trunk routes from Atlantis, Dunoon and Table View to the Civic Centre station and between Dunoon and Century City remain the busiest of all of the MyCiTi routes.
Routes 108 and 109 from Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu to the station in Adderley Street, as well as Route 107 between Camps Bay and the Civic Centre station, and Route 102 between the Salt River Railway station and the Civic Centre station have recorded the highest number of journeys for routes in mixed traffic where buses do not travel on dedicated red bus lanes:
• More than 162 000 instances of boarding and alighting were recorded at stops along Route 108 between Hangberg and the Adderley station
• Up to 133 608 instances of boarding and alighting were recorded at stops along Route 109 between Imizamo Yethu and the Adderley station
• Up to 137 736 instances of boarding and alighting were recorded at stops along Route 107 between Camps Bay and the Civic Centre station
• Nearly 94 000 instances of boarding and alighting were recorded at the stops along Route 102 between the Salt River railway station and the Civic Centre station.
‘We are also inspired by the enthusiasm with which the communities from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha have embraced the N2 Express service,’ said Councillor Herron.
Since the launch on 4 July 2014 of the MyCiTi N2 Express service from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to the Civic Centre station in Cape Town, nearly 1 000 000 passenger journeys have been recorded.
‘The uptake of the N2 Express service is still steadily increasing, with a total number of 81 290 passenger journeys recorded in August 2015. As far as the whole service is concerned, a total of 1 424 086 passenger journeys were recorded on all of the MyCiTi routes in August 2015. This is an increase of nearly 10% when compared with August 2014,’ said Councillor Herron.
