Hout Bay construction to affect road users

In July, construction will begin on a new staging area for MyCiTi buses in The Promenade, off Main Road, in Hout Bay. There will be road closures and other important changes during this time.

MyCiTi buses have become a familiar sight on the roads of Hout Bay following the launch of two routes to the central city, via Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu. In order to make the service more efficient, Transport for Cape Town (TCT) is establishing a staging area on a portion of council-owned land. 

The purpose of the staging area is to house buses overnight to allow for the efficient start of early morning and late night services to Hout Bay. No washing, fuelling or maintenance of buses will take place at the staging area. 

When the staging area is completed permanent MyCiTi bus stops will be located there, replacing the existing temporary stops in Main Road. Construction is due to begin in July and will involve the rehabilitation of The Promenade, which will be closed to general traffic in two phases. This will affect vehicle access to the petrol station and Promenade shopping centre, and thereafter access to properties between Beach Crescent and the beachfront.

Once work on the road is completed, construction of the staging area will begin. Access to the shopping centre will be from Main Road and Melkhout Crescent. Transport for Cape Town regrets any inconvenience caused by the closures and thanks the Hout Bay community for their patience.

Phase 1 of construction

Expected duration: 2 months

The Promenade will be closed to traffic between Main Road and Beach Crescent. MyCiTi passengers will not be affected as buses will travel to the beachfront before turning around and stopping at the existing temporary bus stops in Main Road. 

Drivers wishing to access the Caltex petrol station should use the Main Road entrance. Vehicle access to the shops in the Promenade Centre should use the rear entrance to the parking bays in Beach Crescent.

Phase 2 of construction

Expected duration: 3 months

Once The Promenade is reopened, MyCiTi buses will resume traveling along Beach Crescent, stopping in Main Road. Property owners on the section of The Promenade, between Beach Crescent and the beachfront, will be affected. 

Arrangements will be made for access for residents and a temporary parking area will be available at the intersection of Beach Crescent and The Promenade. Access to the shopping centre will be via Main Road and Melkhout Crescent.
