Fare increase and new myconnect products, 1 July 2015
2015-06-09
Every year there are changes to the MyCiTi tariffs, which come into effect on 1 July as part of the City of Cape Town’s annual budget. New travel products are also being introduced to help provide passengers with the best possible service. Find out below how these changes will affect you.
Annual increase in fares
MyCiTi has a distance-based fare system with various distance bands – the further you travel the more you will pay. New fares for a one-way journey, including transfers are indicated in the table.
Pay less for a myconnect card
From 1 July 2015, a myconnect card will cost R30, instead of R35. Because the myconnect card is a banking card it expires after three years and will need to be replaced. Check your card for the expiry date. The card replacement fee is R20.
Get Mover points for R30
From 1 July 2015, Mover packages will be available for R30. Other Mover packages cost R50, R80, R100, R150, R200, R400, R600 and R1000. Load Mover packages at MyCiTi stations. R1 = 1 Mover point. Loading Mover points on your myconnect card means you save an average of 30% on fares at any time of the day every day of the week.
Take advantage of shorter peaks
Fares are higher in the weekday morning and afternoon peak than the saver (off-peak) period. From 1 July 2015, the peak periods have been reduced to encourage more people to travel outside the peak period. The new hours are as follows:
Peak: 06:45 – 08:00 and 16:15 – 17:30 on weekdays only
Saver: All other times and on weekends
Note changes to penalty fares
There are penalty fares charged if you do not tap in and tap out correctly. To help users get used to the system, from 1 July 2015 a lower penalty fare of R10 will be deducted for the first three instances on new cards. Thereafter the penalty fare charged will be the usual R22 or R83 at the Airport.
Buy a single-trip card
These cards are valid for one journey only, including transfers. The R35 cards can be used on all routes except the Airport. The R85 cards can be used on all routes including the Airport. Get them from MyCiTi station kiosks and from special dispensers in some stations. Please place them in the special recycling containers as you exit MyCiTi stations or buses.
Invest in a monthly package
If you make longer journeys every day – such as from Khayelitsha or Atlantis to the central city, or from Hout Bay to Montague Gardens – then it may pay to buy a monthly travel package. This is a new product that can be loaded onto your myconnect card and which includes your first two journeys, with transfers, per day. It is valid for 30 days from the date you load it on your myconnect card. The monthly package, excluding the Airport, is R530 and the monthly package, which includes the Airport, is R780, available only from MyCiTi station kiosks.
