The City of Cape Town invites residents and interested and affected parties to information days to learn more about the upcoming construction work along Govan Mbeki Road as part of the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service in the metro-south east.

The information days will be hosted in Lentegeur, Philippi, Gugulethu, and Khayelitsha where the public will hear about how the City intends to keep Cape Town moving with the expansion of the MyCiTi bus service. Read more below: The City of Cape Town will start construction work in the Philippi area around mid-August 2024, if all goes as planned.

The work is related to the infrastructure that is needed for the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service and will affect a section of Govan Mbeki Road between the railway crossing that is approximately 200m from the Klipfontein Road intersection and the R300 bridge. The construction work will take place over a period of at least two and a half years.

‘There is no doubt about the impact on residents and all road users during this time. Unfortunately, roadworks are always inconvenient and for a project of this magnitude, the impact will be even more significant. I thus want to encourage all of those who travel along Govan Mbeki Road and live in the vicinity of the upcoming project to please attend the information days so that you can be well informed of what is coming, and how to plan around that,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The four public information sessions will take place as follows:

During the construction period, one traffic lane in each direction may be closed to traffic at any given time. ‘We will confine the roadworks to off-peak times on weekdays to avoid creating further congestion, but we ask commuters to please anticipate delays, to avoid the area as far as possible, and please to be patient with the construction team.

‘Once operational, the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service will provide commuters from 30 communities in the metro-south east with scheduled, safe, and direct public transport between Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha and Wynberg and Claremont. The construction will start in a months’ time, if all goes according to plan and we want to ensure that everyone understands what the roadworks will entail,’ said Councillor Quintas.
