It’s all systems go for the 2020 edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The world's largest timed cycle race is happening in the Mother City this weekend with the main race on Sunday, 8 March 2020.

‘The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the biggest events in the world, attracting cyclists from all corners of the globe. It is an opportunity for us as Capetonians and South Africans to showcase to the world our ability to host major international events.

‘This is an event that not only encourages healthy lifestyles, but also creates job opportunities. It has also become a great economic driver, impacting the retail, logistics and hospitality industries in the city. As Cape Town, we welcome the thousands of visitors and we are looking forward to hosting them in our beautiful city,’ said Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.

The City of Cape Town, working with the Cycle Tour Trust, has put all the necessary measures in place to ensure a safe and fun environment for cyclists as well as the spectators who will be cheering on the side-lines. From a safety and security perspective, the City’s enforcement agencies will be out along the route, managing road closures and traffic flow and ensuring public safety.

‘The preparations for the Cycle Tour have been happening behind the scenes for months and we are satisfied that we have put in place all the measures to deliver a successful, world-class event.

‘The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has devised an extensive plan to mitigate any potential risks. We are monitoring the weather situation, particularly the wind, but we have made all the necessary arrangements to ensure the safety of participants,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The City’s emergency services including Disaster Risk Management, Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, Fire and Rescue and Metro Police are on duty to support the South African Police Service who are serving as the lead agency for the event.

Motorists are advised to take note of the temporary road closures that will be in place over the weekend and to plan their trips accordingly.
