The City of Cape Town commends law enforcement officials for the speedy arrest of 40 people following the stoning and setting alight of two MyCiTi buses in Montague Gardens on 19 March 2014.
The suspects appeared in the Milnerton Magistrates Court on 20 March 2014 in connection with public violence and malicious damage to Council property. They were released on warning and will appear again once the incident has been investigated.
Councillor Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, said: “The City commends the South African Police Service, Metro Police Department and all other Law Enforcement officials involved in restoring order after this despicable act. We will use all resources at our disposal to bring the perpetrators to book.
“In the meantime the City will make every effort to ensure the safety of MyCiTi passengers. Additional law enforcement measures such as the patrolling of the route between Tableview, Killarney and Milnerton will remain in place. Law enforcement officials have also been deployed on the buses to protect the passengers and the City’s property,” he said.
