Get ready for new MyCiTi services
2013-10-10
The City of Cape Town will activate a number of new MyCiTi routes over the next two months. In the weeks between now and then, the City’s transport authority, Transport for Cape Town (TCT), will provide more information in each of the targeted areas, to help residents get ready for these new routes.
“The new routes will take us a step closer to realising our vision of truly integrated transport in Cape Town. We know an integrated transport system is an important step towards more integrated communities. As part of our efforts to build an Inclusive City, our progress in this regard remains critical,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.
Because of the 12-year vehicle operator contracts signed in September this year, many of the existing minibus-taxi and bus services along the new routes will be phased out.
“This means that commuters who currently use these forms of transport must make sure they are aware of the new MyCiTi services that will be available for them to use, in place of their existing transport options,” said Councillor Herron.
On 2 November 2013, MyCiTi will start operating in Vredehoek, Oranjezicht, Sea Point (along High Level Road and Beach Road via the V&A Waterfront), Melkbosstrand and Duynefontein.
On 30 November, two routes will launch between the Silo area of the V&A Waterfront, and over Kloof Nek to Camps Bay. In the Century City area, the existing shuttle service will be replaced by a MyCiTi route from the Century City rail station along Century City Boulevard to Montague Gardens.
The signing of 12-year vehicle operator contracts made many aspects of Transport for Cape Town’s plan to introduce MyCiTi to more Capetonians, a reality.
“Transport for Cape Town’s vision for MyCiTi is as one of a number of safe, reliable and efficient transport modes catering for the needs of commuters. Everyone who would like to use MyCiTi needs to get ready – get your myconnect card and load credit,” said Councillor Herron.
In the coming weeks, pamphlets will be distributed in each of the areas covered by the new routes, explaining to commuters how they can start making use of the MyCiTi service.
New MyCiTi stations – at Queen’s Beach, Omuramba, Royal Ascot, Porterfield, Sandown and Melkbosstrand – will be opened to the public ahead of the routes becoming active, so that the public can buy their myconnect cards and load them with the necessary travel money for their planned journeys.
“We look forward to welcoming new passengers on our buses,” said Councillor Herron.
