MyCiTi stations were filled to capacity on Sunday 19 March when thousands of passengers from all over Cape Town took advantage of free services to experience the convenience of a MyCiTi bus and visit the many things to do along the routes. Many took trains, minibus taxis and other buses to get to their nearest MyCiTi station or stop, experiencing first-hand the network effect of linking the various modes of public transport. Some people waited from early in the morning for the first bus to make the most of the free-ride day.

The event was hugely popular, with more than 56 000 passengers using the service on the day and an extra 180 buses on the road to meet the demand. The busiest routes were from Mitchells Plain to the city centre, Hout Bay, Camps Bay, Dunoon and Table View, from Atlantis to Melkbosstrand and Table View, Koeberg Road to the city centre, and Table View to Melkbosstrand.

Lucky passengers were treated to more than 60 000 giveaways, including MyCiTi branded shopping bags, pens and beanies. More than 850 first-time passengers made their way to Civic Centre and Table View stations to get their free myconnect cards, loaded with 30 Mover points, to join the MyCiTi family.

Meanwhile Marvin, the popular MyCiTi mascot, was a hit keeping the little ones entertained and posing for pictures as he moved from one station to another. Ambassadors were available to assist passengers with queries, while law enforcement and ambulance services were also at hand to ensure a smooth and fun-filled day.

Passengers also visited the Foreshore Freeway Exhibition to share their preferences from the six shortlisted proposals for the redevelopment of the Foreshore Precinct, while others used it to run their daily errands.
