Public open days about MyCiTi Phase 2A

A total of 30 public open days about the draft concept plans for the proposed MyCiTi service in the metro south-east – commonly referred to as the Lansdowne/Wetton Corridor – are currently underway. At these public meetings, residents and interested parties will be able to get the latest information about the proposed alignment of the MyCiTi trunk routes and proposed stops and stations in their areas. ‘The concept design of Phase 2A of the MyCiTi service (the Lansdowne/Wetton Corridor) is now ready to be presented to the public before detailed design work gets underway. We call on local residents and interested parties to comment on all aspects of the proposed new service, including the alignment of the routes and proposed locations of MyCiTi stations and stops. I therefore want to urge residents to please make use of this opportunity to engage with us as the proposed MyCiTi service will have a long-lasting impact on all of the 35 communities along the two trunk routes,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.
A similar public information process was undertaken in Phase 1. It helped the City to refine and improve its proposals and also assisted the City in its engagement with interested residents and stakeholders, such as minibus-taxi operators and Golden Arrow Bus Services.
‘TCT officials involved in the technical planning of the MyCiTi routes, stops and stations and teams involved with the infrastructure will be present at the open days to provide the public with answers to their questions and to give clarity where there is confusion. A map indicating the proposed trunk routes, stops and stations will also be available. We will take note of all the comments and proposals – these will be incorporated in a report which is to be presented to the Transport for Cape Town Portfolio Committee, as well as to Council and which will be considered during the detailed design phase,’ said Councillor Herron.
‘It is important to reiterate that the 30 open days form the first round of engagement. In the coming months and years, the City will be talking to communities regularly about the various stages of Phase 2A as well the specifics of each area where efficient, safe and affordable public transport matters most. We are committed to working with our residents to ensure that the next roll-out of the MyCiTi service succeeds,’ said Councillor Herron.
The concept plans for the Lansdowne/Wetton Corridor consist of two interchangeable dedicated trunk routes and will reach up to 1,4 million residents in the metro-south east. The concept design proposes the following:
- The trunk route from Khayelitsha will run along Japhta K Masemola Road with the distance from Khayelitsha to Wynberg at approximately 35,5 km
- The trunk route from Mitchells Plain will run along AZ Berman Drive with the distance from Mitchells Plain to Claremont at approximately 25 km
- These two trunk routes will interconnect along Govan Mbeki Road between Stock and Strandfontein Roads/Jan Smuts Drive
- Multiple feeder routes will link 35 communities along the Lansdowne/Wetton Corridor
- 33 closed stations and 31 open stations/stops
- Six park-and-ride facilities
- Three bus depot facilities
- A proposed couplet along Brodie and Main Roads in Wynberg
- It is expected that construction will commence within the next two months, with the two prioritised sites being Stock Road in Philippi and Strandfontein Road in Ottery.
‘If everything works out according to plan, we will launch the Lansdowne/Wetton Corridor towards the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021. Admittedly, this will require an immense effort and some sacrifices. We will have to work together in finding solutions and reaching agreements. Each one of us – the City and the National Government, the contractors, the role players in the public transport industry, the taxi operators, and our residents – has to contribute if we want to succeed in building this corridor which is to become a monument to access, opportunity and inclusivity,’ said Councillor Herron.
