Statement by Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron

Today is a day of thank yous.

Thank you to the engineers, the contractors and the planners who have worked so hard, and so long, to make this new piece of infrastructure possible.

And, thank you to the people of this area, who have waited patiently during our prolonged construction periods. The City of Cape Town is more than aware of the immense impact this project has had on your area, especially on anyone who tried to make use of Blaauwberg Road in recent months.

I hope today you will agree with me, that the wait was worth it.

The City of Cape Town celebrated the signing of 12-year vehicle operator contracts last weekend, an event that is important in that it now makes so many other aspects of our plans a reality. With the certainty that comes with the signing of long term contracts, we can now move ahead with the implementation of our next stages.

Yesterday (Saturday) we introduced important changes to MyCiTi services in the Table View area. These include the opening of three stations along Blaauwberg Road (including this one at Wood where we are today) and the launch of four permanent routes serving Parklands and Big Bay.

Two new parking areas will open at the intersection of Blaauwberg Road and Wood Drive, which will be available for passengers wishing to park and ride.

A new cycle lane with priority signals for cyclists has been built on the island in the middle of Blaauwberg Road. This will soon connect all the way to Potsdam Road, giving cyclists safe passage along this busy route.

“When will the bus be in my area?” I can hear you ask.

Our overall plan is to roll out the MyCiTi service across the Peninsula. Everyone will eventually be able to benefit from this service, no matter where you work or play.

Our phase 1 routes should all be operational by October next year.

On the second of November this year, we will be launching:

·         The Montague Gardens/ Century City area route

·         The route for Oranjezicht and Vredehoek

·         Melkbosstrand to Omuramba

·         Area routes in Melkbosstrand and Duinefontein

·         And buses along Beach Road and High Level Road on the Atlantic Seaboard.
